PHOTOGRAPHS

How do you feel about photographs on this site? I was approached at Crufts by a member who felt that one of the pictues of the awards in a class at the Open show showed her dog with his feet in an odd position.

Now, I am not a professional photographer. Mrs Phillips and Mrs McGregor, who have helped a great deal in taking photos at open shows, are not professionals either. And I can assure you that the Club is not going to pay for a professional photographer. Any such photographs will be the ones you send in.

So what do you think? Should I go on taking pictures at shows? (If you didn`t want your dog photographed you could say so on the spot.)

Or would you prefer that only photographs sent in by dog`s owners should be used?

Meanwhile I`ll hold back the rest of the Crufts pictures.

MEMBER`S FEATURE - CHAPPELL

The Late Barallan Soft N' Silky at Chappell was our foundation bitch from Hazel Barr, its all her fault we're in the breed today. She was by Ch Dunian Rory ex Dongays Star Appeal.

Chappell Intermezzo was from our first Litter out of Ch Dourhu Domino (Ann & Malcolm owned him) and Barallan Soft and Silky

Leo, Chappell Leonidas was our very first CC Winner, owned by my very good friend Aileen Goodwin (Imago).

Chappell Razzamataz has proved to be an excellent producer, still going strong at nearly 9 years. (Dongays Star of Ecosse ex Chappell Tango).

Abbeyton Silver Charm at Chappell has brought our breeding back home after loosing my mum a few years ago. It was a very difficult few years, and we had allowed the dogs to slide a little. Joan Savage let us have "Lacey" to bring us back into the ring again. Abbeyton Silver Rain (her Father) is by our Chappell Peaches and Cream.

THE WHITE STUFF

What is it about dogs and snow? I`ve been cursing the heavy falls, while even my staid middle aged girls have been cavorting and rolling about in the white stuff, getting soaked and loving it.

Not to worry - it`ll be gone by the weekend. I look forward to seeing you all at the Club Open Show. Do come and tell me what you think about this site - I welcome any suggestions for improving it.

RIVERDANCE

The show season has lurched into motion yet again and so it was that I found myself decanted from a bus at an unholy hour into the car park of a dark and frosty agricultural centre, to be assailed at once by dark and rich agricultural smells.

There were instant cries of horror at this pungent reminder of what cattle do best. I said it was a good honest country smell.

"It`s got to be the worst country smell in the world, then"

I said mildly that no, it wasn`t - the worst I could remember was when the knacker`s man didn`t come for the dead ewe for six days one hot June. When he did come he made the immortal remark:

"Aye, nothing goes off quicker than a deid yowe."

Silence on country smells after that.

Florian and his brother did well. Florian is really getting the hang of this showing business and concentrated with all his little might. He also made repeated efforts to urinate on my leg, leading me to do a strange spasmodic intermittent version of Riverdance......a very appropriate name, under the circumstances.

I remarked to another exhibitor, "Did you see that? He`s developing quite a strong character - arrogance is what he needs in the ring."And then I thought - what am I saying? If a dog cocks its leg on a person, the normal response of a non-dog person is likely to inhibit his piddling ,and indeed his reproductive aspirations for months to come ............

Just how much has dogshowing warped my brain? Would a normal person be parading in a public hall with a small manifestly incontinent dog, wearing a black jacket embroidered with sequinned butterflies? (That`s me, not the dog, folks.......we haven`t gone that far downhill yet.) Should I seek help before it`s too late? ........

LOATHSOME LIVER

There has been a lot of discussion about the colour liver recently. Liver, of course, is a forbidden colour in Papillons. That is, as far as showing is concerned – a liver Pap would make jjust as good a pet as any other. The colour doesn`t carry any defects with it. It`s just cosmetic.

A lot of the discussion centred on just what liver is and what it looks like. That`s a good sign. It means that lots of people out there have never seen a liver Pap, and that in turn tells us that there aren`t many livers about out there.

Well what does liver look like?

The liver Papillons I have seen have had the colouring of Springer spaniels. The essential thing about liver is that the dog has no black colouring anywhere on its body. That includes nose, eyerims, eyes, pads and nails. Where you would expect the black you see a uniform brown., except in the eyes, which can vary from chocolate to a greenish colour.

Now there are lots of odd colours in Paps, especially in some of the reds, and I have heard people say of the deep rich red which I thnk of as “Swedish red’ because a fair number of Scandinavian imports have had it, “That must be liver.” Well, if he has any black anywhere on him it isn`t.. It`s that simple.

Why does it turn up at all?

Like PRA, it is carried as a recessive and doesn`t appear until a dog and a bitch (neither of which is liver coloured but which both carry it) are mated together..Then some of the puppies will be liver/white. (Of course liver to liver, or liver to black/white would also produce the colour, but I am assuming that no-one would do such a mating). If the carrier bitch is never mated to another carrier she will never produce liver puppies. Add to this the fact that the colour is evident in the young puppy and that responsible show people would never breed from a liver dog, and you can see why it is rare.

Why is it forbidden anyway?

That`s a hard one. I think the answer is in the eyes – liver ones tend to look a bit hard, and in toydogs, where the head is so important, we like to look into those deep black melting ones, not pale washy ones.

A final thought. Where there are livers there are usually blues – animals where the black is entirely replaced by blue-grey. Has anyone out there seen one of those?

The society was informed by the Magnum leisure centre one week prior to the show that there had been a double booking and the dog show had to find another venue.

They were fortunate that the Maritime Museum (just round the corner from the Magnum) was able to accommodate them.

Definitely a venue with a difference, not often you share the hall with boats and their engines,
some of them so big they totally overshadowed the rings.

This report provided by Joan Savage - thank you! And as usual, congratulations to all!

THE PAPILLON LILY

This is the Papillon or Butterfly Lily, Amaryllis Papilio, which has been in flower for me since Christmas day. It looks like an exotic orchid with its green and purple stripes, but in fact it is related to the red and pink Amaryllis you see in the garden centres, and grows from a bulb like them. It is not difficult to grow, and flowers every year for me.
